Seine Karriere erreichte einen neuen Höhepunkt, als er entdeckte, dass einzelne Moleküle genau wie Halbleiter und Metalle elektrischen Strom leiten können. Solche Nanoleiter könnten schon bald in Quantencomputern Verwendung finden, von denen man sich eine so hohe Leistung erhofft, dass sich damit die raffiniertesten Verschlüsselungen knacken lassen.

Alt Bundesrat Deiss auf der japanischen Botschaft geehrt

Alt Bundesrat Joseph Deiss wurde kürzlich vom japanischen Kaiser Akihito Orden verliehen. Am 20.2.2009 wurde Deiss auf der japanischen Botschaft in Bern anlässlich eines Empfang geehrt. S.E. Botschafter Komatsu hielt die Laudatio.

Den Orden „The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun“ erhielt Joseph Deiss für sein Engagement für die guten wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Japan und der Schweiz.

Joseph Deiss hatte sich während seiner Amtszeit bemüht, die „Joint Governmental Study Group for the strengthening economic relations between Japan and Switzerland“ ins Leben zu rufen. Vor diesem Hintergrund begannen die Verhandlungen für ein Abkommen über Freihandel und Wirtschaftliche Partnerschaft zwischen den beiden Ländern. Im September dieses Jahres wurde nach mehreren Verhandlungsrunden eine grundsätzliche Einigung erzielt.

Die Zeremonie der Verleihung des Ordens an Joseph Deiss fand bereits am 5. November 2008 im Kaiserpalast in Tokyo statt.
